What is print design?
Textile print design for fashion brands is the process of creating patterns and motifs to be applied to fabrics, giving them distinct visual characteristics. These designs can range from bold, graphic patterns to intricate, detailed motifs. The primary goal is to enhance the fabric’s aesthetic while maintaining functionality. Textile print design is widely used in industries such as fashion, interior decoration, and branding, where it plays a significant role in differentiating products and adding value.
The process involves several key factors, including selecting suitable color palettes, determining the scale of the design, and ensuring that the pattern repeats seamlessly across the fabric. Designers often use specialized software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, to create and refine their designs. Techniques such as digital printing, screen printing, and sublimation printing are commonly employed to transfer these patterns onto textiles. Digital printing allows for high-resolution designs with virtually unlimited colors, while screen printing is better suited for high-volume production with fewer colors.
With many techniques and tools available, designers continue to innovate and bring fresh ideas to the world of textiles. Lotta Lorier creates fashion prints based on her hand-painted artwork. To keep the hand-painted feel, she makes seamless patterns using Photoshop in RGB color mode. These watercolor prints are best for digital or sublimation printing. If needed, the colors can also be adjusted for screen printing.
Textile print designers often collaborate closely with fashion brands and clients to create custom designs that align with their vision and target audience. In my work, I collaborate with fashion brands to develop unique patterns that reflect their identity and meet their specific needs. The process begins with understanding the brand’s concept, aesthetic, and requirements. Based on this, I create hand-painted designs that I digitalize in Photoshop. After refining the designs through feedback, I ensure they are production-ready, providing files formatted for digital printing, sublimation, or screen printing as required. This collaborative approach ensures the final product is not only visually striking but also perfectly suited to the brand's goals.
